Created by Ann-Katrin Krenz, Folding Patterns is an investigation of methods to create three dimensional structures that behave like folded paper and have controllable properties. The ultimate goal is to develop an automatic analysis of the behavior of paper, in order to optimize the folding patterns with a genetic algorithm in the future. The project is still under development.
In the video Krenz created digital versions of folded paper. The idea of taking something handmade and translating it into a digital medium appealed to me. I therefore decided to make an ‘origami font’. I folded strips of paper to form the letters of the alphabet, which be scanned and used on computers. The font is geometric, yet the paper gives it a more organic look and feel. It is quite legible, although would work more effectively as a large – scale font for headings or posters.
